Let’s build a Hugel! A HUGE Hugel!
Hugelkultur is a foundational Permaculture technique. It creates no-till raised garden and crop beds that quickly become enduring features of a sustainable, edible garden. Created using only cast-off plant debris, Hugels magically hold moisture, sequester carbon, encourage mycorrhizal growth. The fertile soil they create becomes a consistent source of long-term nutrients for plants.
In this hands-on workshop, you’ll first learn about the science behind Hugelkultur and various techniques and designs for building them. Then we’ll quickly switch on over to actively create a Hugel (or two, or three, or more!) from the ground up, using copious on-site materials.
The workshop will be held in a large, intriguing, private garden in SW Seattle, abundant with birds, plants, and copious material perfect for Hugel-making. The cost is just $10 per person (and only $5 for Sustainable Seattle or any SCALLOPS members, as well as members of Plant Amnesty!). The price includes all workshop materials, handouts, and access to a private web space for sharing class photos and online resources. As a bonus, you’ll even be able to take material home to create your own Hugel beds.
We will be there rain or shine, so please come prepared for the weather!
